More than 30 people hurt after lightning strikes German rock festival – twice

More than 30 people were hurt after lightning struck a rock festival in western Germany.
The Rock am Ring festival in the town of Mendig was said to be hit by two lightning strikes last night, injuring 33 rock fans.
Police and organisers said eight people from production teams were injured when the first strike hit the backstage area at around 1am.

Organisers later stopped gigs and offered revellers shelter in large, lightning-proof tents.
Then just before 4am, lightning hit the festival’s camping area and another 25 people were injured.
According to reports, no one suffered a direct hit by the lightning.
Police say all of those affected have been taken to hospital for observation and are not seriously injured.
The Rock am Ring festival, which translates as Rock in the Park, runs until tomorrow and is still going ahead as planned.
